When is it time to look into memory care?

Your family doesn’t have to navigate the fears and uncertainty associated with a diagnosis alone. CERTUS Senior Living specializes in the development and management of premier memory care communities.

Dementia

There are over 100 different types of dementia. Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. The two most common examples of dementia are Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases, and Vascular dementia. While symptoms of dementia can vary greatly, often at least two of the following mental functions are significantly impaired to be considered dementia: memory, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reason and judgements, and visual perception. It is important to note that there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies.

Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia and causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, as most people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. But Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer’s treatments cannot stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, it can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, a worldwide effort is under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing.

Parkinson's disease

Parkinson’s disease is a long-term disorder of the central nervous system which leads to progressive deterioration of motor function due to loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. Primary symptoms include tremor, stiffness, slowness, impaired balance, and later on a shuffling gait. Dementia becomes common in the advanced stages of the disease. Like Alzheimer’s, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease but current treatment plans have shown impressive improvement in symptoms.

Certus at Waterford Lakes in Orlando is an exceptional community for those in need of memory care. Both of my parents were residents there, and my family and I could not have been more pleased with the care they received at Certus. Without exception, every single employee who you encounter at Certus shows love, compassion, and professionalism to the residents and to their families. They make the residents feel cared for and treat them like family, with dignity and respect. The environment is more like a home than an “institution” or a business.
It’s a community of caregivers who truly care. There’s no need for me to single out a few outstanding employees, because it’s literally the entire staff! Every staff member is an expert at what they do.
The environment is clean, attractive, and cheery. It’s a joy to watch the staff interact with the residents with such genuine love. I cannot praise Certus enough – there’s no place quite like it.

Making the decision to put a loved one in a memory care facility is very difficult, but choosing Certus at Waterford Lakes was the best decision I made for my father. The facility itself is so well thought out for Alzheimer/Dementia patients, giving them a very warm and welcoming feeling. More importantly though was the level of care that my father received there, from beginning to the end. The staff treated him like family, making him feel loved and respected. When I would visit everyone was always so friendly, and when I left I felt confident and secure that he was safe and happy. The Wellness Director was there for us every step of the way, answering all of my questions and making sure all of my fathers physical and mental needs were being taken care of. My father has since past away, but at the end when he needed hospice they recommended Cornerstone, and I cannot say enough amazing things about them either! Choosing the right memory care unit is so important and I can say without a doubt that Certus is one of the best places for your loved one, and would highly recommend them!

There is no greater gift than knowing that your loved one is in a safe, loving, compassionate, caring environment when you cannot be there yourself. At CERTUS Waterford Lakes, the staff is very well trained in providing the highest level of health, wellness and safety, but always interacting lovingly with residents of the community. I have learned so much about caring for seniors and those with memory care needs and I am often left wondering how they do it every day, with such a positive loving attitude. That is what CERTUS Waterford Lakes was for my father, Jim Fry. He knew was loved by his caregivers right up to the minute of his passing.
